What is a Selkirk Rex??(the short version) The Selkirk Rex is a newer breed that originated in Montana. The founding mother cat was Miss DePesto of Noface, found in a shelter in Montana and then given to Persian Breeder, Jeri Newman in Livingston, MT. Jeri crossed this curly haired cat with one of her Persians. This was the beginning of the Selkirk Rex breed, producing three curly and three straight hair kittens. The Selkirk Rex is a natural occurring breed, meaning that man did not have a hand in "creating" it.
Since the Selkirk Rex is still a new breed CFA allows out crosses with Persians, Himalayans, British Shorthairs and Exotic Shorthairs allowing breeders to broaden the gene pool.
Kittens can be born with curly or straight hair. If it is a curly haired kitten, even it's whiskers will curl!! Short, medium and long curly haired cats are permitted in the show ring. Straight haired kittens still come with the Selkirk Personality and will produce curly haired kittens as well.
This is the short and sweet version, if you would like to know more about Selkirks please feel free to contact me. There is also a vast amount of information on the internet.
More information on the breed can be found on CFA's website http://www.cfainc.org/breeds/profiles/selkirk.html
